With success rates putting us in the top third highest achieving colleges in the country for all 16-18 qualifications and a ‘Good with outstanding features’ rating from Ofsted, City College can offer your child an excellent learning experience. They will be taught by industry expects in a friendly, supportive atmosphere in facilities which re-create real-life working environments.
At City College our students gain the academic success needed for higher education alongside the skills they need to move into employment.
Remember your child can apply to more than one College, so if they are not sure if A levels are right for them, why not encourage them to look at alternative courses at City College to give them a range of options come GSCE results day?
Tailored Study Programmes
The traditional route from school to A levels to University is one that only around 20% of young people take. There are now so many more options post-16 and City College offers a huge range of career-focused courses that will give your child a really well-rounded education. We offer BTEC Diplomas, NVQs, Foundation Degrees and Apprenticeships; by far the widest choice of courses in the local area.
All students are enrolled on a specialised Study Programme that is completely tailored to their goals, ability and educational needs:
We are committed to making sure that all students gain a good standard (GCSE grade C) of English and mathematics and if this wasn’t achieved at school it will be integrated into their individual Study Programme. There are also elements in the Study Programme for employability, work experience and support to progress on to higher education or employment.
We are first place nationally for Grade A*-C achievement in GCSE English and mathematics for FE colleges, so you can be sure your child will reach their full potential.
The move from school to college can be a daunting for some, but at City College you can be reassured that your child will soon feel settled in a friendly, safe, secure environment with exceptional student support. As well as being taught by highly-qualified experts who know their subjects inside out, our staff are also warm, friendly and truly care about your child’s success.
Once they are here our Student Services team can support students with wellbeing concerns as well as arranging counselling, help with careers, finances and general wraparound support, which students can access at any time during their course.
Our vocational courses provide the ideal preparation for the world of work and entry to higher education, to help your child realise their potential:
Every year City College is the largest feeder of students to the University of Brighton from our Level 3 courses. BTECs are now well respected by universities; over 100,000 BTEC students apply to university every year, with this number steadily rising.
Analysis of Labour Force statistics in a study by London Economics showed that, across age groups and gender, graduates with BTECs had an average full-time employment rate of 80% compared with 74% for A level only graduates.
There is a strong correlation between having a vocational qualification and being in employment. With unemployment rates at a high amongst young people, vocational courses give young people the opportunity to develop the workplace skills and experience that employers value.
Vocational qualifications can result in increased earnings of an estimated £150,000 over a lifetime - comparable to the graduate premium (Association of Accounting Technicians).
The Edge Foundation survey found there is consistent evidence that achieving a vocational qualification has a positive impact on the likelihood of being in employment. 72% felt that vocational skills were essential for improving skills amongst young people.
City College has launched a new ‘City Alumni’ group, aimed at building links with former students and bringing their professional expertise back into the College community for the benefit of current students. If you yourself are City Alumni, please do get in touch as we would be delighted to hear from you.
Notable College alumni who currently have strong links with the College and have offered their support include Ben McKellar (chef/proprietor of acclaimed Gingerman chain of eateries), Clare Rogers (Owner/Founder of Treatment Rooms, Brighton’s best-known beauty spa) and Gresham Blake (designer and menswear impresario).
